About Let Live

Animals belong to themselves, not to us. They should not suffer in our systems of food, science, entertainment and fashion. Instead, they should live free of the tyranny we put upon them. But they cannot claim this freedom alone. “Let Live” is a grassroots forum for people who want to help. Through an open, respectful, and friendly environment this conference will provide an opportunity for attendees to learn skills and strategies to become better advocates for the animals, no matter ones experience level in activism.

This conference is for first-timers, experienced activists, and anybody in between who hopes to make a real difference for animals and build a stronger, more effective community and animal liberation movement. This conference is for anybody who wants to live and let live.

“Let Live” is taking place in Portland, Oregon, June 27th-29th, 2008. It will be held this year on the campus of Portland State University in the Smith Memorial Building. It is being organized by Vegans for Animal Advocacy, with support from No Compromise, Herbivore Magazine, and Food Fight Grocery. ***EARLY REGISTRATION IS CLOSED, PLEASE REGISTER IN PERSON AT THE CONFERENCE, OR AT FRIDAY NIGHT’S EVENT****

“Let Live” would greatly appreciate any help you can offer to offset the costs of the event. We’re asking for a suggested donation of $10 to register for both Saturday and Sunday’s events. Of course, if you want to donate more, that would be appreciated too.

Due to space restrictions, we’re having to put a limit on the number of attendees. The safe bet number is 250 people, and that would allow for everybody having a seat in the biggest room. We’ll allow some overbooking because realistically not everybody is going to need to be in that big room at the same time but to be safe book now to ensure you get a spot! Don’t worry though, we’ll still try to make room for folks who don’t show up until the day of the conference if at all possible - but we may be down to standing room only at that point!

Friday night, June 27th. Kickoff will be a chill evening of hanging out, with good cheap food and fun. We’ll all be hanging out from 6-8pm, eating from the awesome taco bar (brought to you by our pals at Los Gorditos). Not sure what else, but there will be words spoken from the organizers and some general meeting and greeting and networking and such. Show up early, as food will probably run out. It will be in the Smith Memorial Ballroom (SMSU 355, same building as the conference, third floor.)

Saturday & Sunday. June 28th & 29th. The “meat” of the conference. It all starts at 9am Saturday, and we rock on until 6pm. Don’t worry, there’ll be lots of great food there from Blossoming Lotus for lunch. Then we’ve got a rawkin night at Bye & Bye planned (with cheap transportation to and from the bar) but you’ll still have to make it back to the conference by 10am Sunday. Don’t whine - it’s not that early! There will be coffee. And you’re not coming to Portland (just) to stay out drinking all night, you’re coming to get busy. Stay in the Broadway Building on PSU campus! European style rooms with single beds, private bathrooms and kitchens. Green building with rain water harvesting, low energy usage, and recycled materials design. Only 50$/night with free wireless access, fans, coffee pots, phones, alarm clocks and linens (bedding and towels).

Stay at the college hotel - University Place. It’s within walking distance of the campus. And our special discounted rate of $89/night, double occupancy +$12/night if you need parking. The parking lots closest to Smith Memorial Student Union are Parking Lots 1 & 2. Parking Lot 2 has many more parking spots and would be the ideal choice.

Saturday: Pay to Park using the Pay-stations (Around 6$/day) in any of the lots below.

Sunday: Free to park in any of the locations below!
